DVD & Blu-ray Update March 2024 part 1
The Police box is probably the box of the year. Go for it!
I don’t know what prompted that suggestion but I can’t imagine getting it unless it is on offer really cheap. I enjoy their albums but I don’t feel the need to go in depth on their work.
You make a fair point about Barney’s voice, though for me it was endearingly weak in the early years I can understand some people wouldn’t be keen. It will have been around 85/86 I believe, upon the advice of John Robie, Barney started taking singing lessons! Loved hearing your take on the ISC/Germanic vocal growl again! 😄
To be fair I think it’s I’ve footage I’ve seen clips of where his voice was rest out of tune that I struggled with but the singing lessons certainly make sense. I deliberately did the growl again to entertain you 😂
if you want the originals, get Substance on CD by New order
To be more specific, I’d recommend the new 4-CD reissue of Substance. The original release had re-recordings of Temptation and Confusion, whereas the new edition adds in the original ‘82 and ‘83 versions
I’ll keep an eye out.
Monster squad, they used to show that on Saturday afternoons
1. “Love Over Gold” (1982) 2. “Brothers in Arms” (1985) 3. “Making Movies” (1980) 4. “Dire Straits” (1978) 5. “On Every Street” (1991) 6. “Communique” (1979) Great ranking list Martin, here’s mine from most favourite to least favourite and there’s no stinkers here trust me!! I love Dire Straits, I’ve just recently got into them and all their albums have songs that I can enjoy any day of the year. 😄👍
Interesting list Daniel, thanks for sharing
@@mpharris1999 No worries, some of these could swap depending on what day it is. 😂👍
That’s often the way
@@mpharris1999 Yes, I think “Communique” is a great album but I just prefer the others a bit more. 😊👍
Great collection!!! 💜💜
I would make a similar ranking. I think PJ Harvey has the Old Testament, which includes the albums produced from 1992 to 2004, and the New Testament, which includes the albums produced from 2007 to 2023. I have no doubt that Let England Shake is the best album of the New Testament. For me, the top 2 albums of the Old Testament are Rid of Me and To Bring You My Love. Even the Mercury winning Stories from the... I include a little bit behind. So, the top 3 for me are Rid of Me, To Bring You My Love and Let England Shake, and it's very hard for me to decide which one is the best of these 3
Interesting, I understand the divide into the two eras.
Man, is that all there is to this steelbook? No booklet or insert? Artwork only on the left side panel on the inside? No exclusive extras different from the regular release? This is my all time favorite movie but I dont think I will be getting ripped for the steelbook version. Very underwhelming?
From what I’ve seen watching steelbook unboxing over the years that is quite normal. It’s not billed as a special edition or anything, it’s just a steelbook version of the standard 4K release
Did you really just gripe over £1.80
No, I made a point of not griping, I was just mentioning it because regulars know I normally get a discount (and besides it would have been £8.80 across all the records)
Love the look of the double Janis Joplin.I’m sure I read somewhere recently that there is a formula/compound that you can add to your cleaning system that covers/fills in any deepish marks and scratches. Don’t fret about your discount.I’m sure ASOV will reimburse you once they have seen this video.
I can’t say I’ve heard of that compound. They don’t need to reimburse me, the discount is a bonus not something I’m “entitled” to.
Hi Martin. I’ll be adding that blur album at some point … thanks for sharing… looking forward to seeing your holiday clothes 😎☀️
😂 I may do a holiday video so be careful what you wish for!
martin great haul. im gonna look into james brown polydor days. other lp u got awesome😊
Thanks Mike
That Rubik’s cube is so cool!
I didn’t hesitate when I saw it!
All your subscribers know you are a huge Prince fan. I remember back in 83 1999 scraped into the UK charts at no.25. A lot of us maybe thinking that was it. Then come the epic When Doves Cry some 18 months or so later. When did you becone a huge fan, was it Purple Rain era ? (Also just looked it up, rather surprising the album peaked at no 7 in UK)
I have told this story a couple of times on the channel but basically I was joining Britannia Music Club in 1987 and was picking my 5 free introductory cassettes and Purple Rain was an option and I thought to myself “Oh I always like Prince’s songs when I see them on Top of the Pops” so picked it. When they came I put it on my personal cassette player and was instantly hooked, I rewound and listened to the guitar solo in Lets Go Crazy countless times. That was it, I wanted everything he’d done and it snowballed from there.
Great vid as always mate but will pass on this. Was hoping by this point we would all be unwrapping out Purple Rain SDE box sets 🙄☹️
Likewise
Fantastic music. Love Purple Rain....❤
The Confessions box set should be interesting with the new audio commentaries Robin has recorded. Last night I was watching Judy Geeson play Polly Burton in an episode of The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes series. She's perhaps one of those zeitgeisty actresses from the '70s. I saw Inseminoid years ago, and was impressed that Norman J. Warren was making independent films in Britain when so few others were.
Yes, from what I have read the commentaries sound like they’re going to be good. I’m not a huge fan of Judy, I much prefer her sister.
Nice update
Thanks
You lucky chap, this is one of the best combinations of musicians EVER. If you haven't done already, you MUST catch-up on the album from two years ago "First Congregational Church", it's brilliant.
I will
Love it when you give it the old vhe, vhem, vhey etc Some interesting films there.
I hope you aren’t mocking my speech impediment
Not at all!
Thanks
What was the question, the random, annoying drunken guy kept asking Ed Tudor Pole gig?
The main one was “are you still friends with Johnny Rotten?” asked in different ways.
How many copies of the same album do you need? Such a waste of money!
It’s my money, I’ll spend it how I like.
Thanks for haul video Martin. I have a couple of Dinked lps - hadn't considered your definition of dinked. I have one on pre order too. Who have you seen live recently? I've seen Beth Gibbons, CSS, Rufus Wainwright and The Zombies. Cheers Iain
It’s been a poppy month, Take That, Pink, Girls Aloud plus Ed Tudor Pole and some comedy and theatre
another great haul martin. i been on a madness kick. ive loved their music since 1990. i ordered 5 cd by madness from my local amazon. 4 remaster 2 cd originals and their new cd mike friend fro. canada
Nice, I have all their albums on vinyl.
Another great haul. I didn’t realise Neil Hannon was behind the songs for Wonka, great film, the vinyl packages looked fantastic.
Yeah, it was my main reason for watching the film (although I’m a big fan of the books and other films) but I loved the film regardless of the music
Your ISC vocal impression did make me chuckle! In fairness, I would say Cryogenix, whilst I like it a lot, isn’t their strongest work; if and when I get round to ranking the ISC albums it’ll likely be bottom. But it was the only album of theirs I’ve had a duplicate of so far 😄 Glad you enjoyed the Best of New Order, it’s not a flawless compilation but it’s the album that started me out on my NO collecting journey so it means a lot to me personally. I take your point about the plethora of Blue Monday mixes (the one on the CD was the ‘88 mix by Quincy Jones), as you can no doubt imagine I’ve heard a LOT of Blue Monday remixes over the years, some are decent, others not so much!
Glad to entertain 😂 Oh, yeah my mistake with Blue Monday, I just don’t see why they keep messing with a track that is perfect in the first place.
Always nice to see the inspiral carpets 👍
Your t-shirt matched the prince cream single almost coincidence 😅
😂
Great VCLT. Good stuff!
I do love Reet Petite actually, it’s not something I’ve been compelled to purchase but that song brings back so many memories of listening to the radio around ‘86/‘87. I’d be happy to take that off you Martin, but please feel free to wait until you might have any other duplicates to spare, even if it takes months!
It’s yours!
Adrian turning up trumps again 👍
runcorn is near liverpool
Hi Martin, a couple of handy freebies there. Wanted to ask you about Eurythmics, know you not a fan, nor am l particularly, don't mind some of their singles. but you have a particular dislike, is that right?
Yes I do. There’s a couple of their tracks I don’t mind but it’s more that I have issues with Annie Lennox, particularly the way she’ll appear at any charity event at a drop of a hat in order to increase her profile.
Awesome video Martin
Thanks
Hi martin do you have anything from the artist Jimmy barnes.
No
Did you eventually get all your discounts from A slice of vinyl?
I’m not sure what you mean?
I did wonder if you might have the Kylie cassette already but thought I’d roll the dice just in case you didn’t. Regarding playing tapes, though it’s probably not something you’d be considering at any immediate point, but if you wanted any advice on adding a half-decent yet inexpensive cassette player to your system, you know where I am for advice, as that can be a minefield! Unsurprisingly the New Order and ISC albums were duplicates 😄 Everything else is stuff I either like a lot or love, but for one reason or another I was happy to pass it along to a fellow collector. Really appreciate the package you sent me this week Martin, and my unboxing video will be up next week 👍🏼
Thanks (again). I don’t have room to add a cassette deck at the moment and the one in the front room will be mine eventually so probably won’t need to invest in one. I look forward to spinning them all and watching your video.
That is NOT all the Sabbath you need!😂
😂
Highly recommend Resident records in Brighton. It’s always our RSD store. What part of Spain are you going to? I’ve been all over so can probably recommend some wrecka stows 😉
Yeah, Resident is definitely on the list. We’re going to Salou.
I saw Queen rock Montreal 4K version on Disney +,looked and sounded fantastic. I had a great time. 👍♥️
I have it on DVD but may upgrade at some point.
@@mpharris1999 the only problem with Disney+ there’s no live aid footage.
It feels a bit weird commenting on someone’s old videos, but I have been enjoying a lot of your archive recently and I had to share a quick anecdote. I saw Duke Special in concert just before Christmas 2012, but the unusual thing about the gig was it was held in a restaurant just down the street from where I was living at the time, in Wexford, Ireland. Basically my girlfriend at the time was something of a Duke Special fan, so I bought her a couple of CDs she didn’t have and then saw his restaurant gig advertised so I treated her (and me!) to a unique experience of his live show that occurred during a three course meal! €50 per person for an intimate Duke Special performance and three delicious courses, it was a wonderful evening. The night always sticks in my mind as I marvel at it being the shortest distance I’ve ever had to travel for a gig, literally 50 yards down my street 😄 I’d like to say I investigated Duke further after the show, as I did really enjoy his eccentric performance, but life got in the way, moved back to England the following year, etc etc and even to this day I’ve never found the time or inclination to get into his work, despite him starring in the most unique concert I’m likely to ever be in attendance for. I suppose always associating him with my ex puts up a mental block to an extent too, but I really do think I should give Duke a proper go at some point, as I’m certain I’d get a lot out of his work. Great video Martin 👍🏼
Cheers Jimmy, that sounds like a great experience. I completely understand the association with your ex being a barrier but would highly recommend all his work.
Great video as usual. I’m predicting you will start to pick up more black sabbath. I recently got paranoid and already getting ready to buy others. Really love McCartney “all the best” and have that on vinyl
Thanks, we’ll see, I’ve been tempted by the early albums for a while.
Thought of you today Martin as I saw the Prince Shop / Rock It in Poole town centre
Cool, I’m waiting for a delivery from them! I must visit them one day.
Nothing like having your treasured songs of your life’s adventures on real physical format especially when it’s the actual song itself your holding, the dream is a jukebox to hold it all
Never particularly wanted a jukebox but otherwise I agree.
Some interesting additions to the collection, Martin. Have to agree McCartney's all the best is a top notch compilation Bowie's Tonight is somewhat underrated, ok it's not classic Bowie but it's not the dud , everyone makes out. I'm having a Madonna rewind at the minute, playing a lot of her early stuff. Her first 3 releases are classic 80s albums. I don't recall you really mentioning her, are you not a fan?
I don’t mind her but have never been a huge fan. I have Like A Prayer and Who’s That Girl on vinyl and Like A Prayer, Music, The Immaculate Collection and Greatest Hits Volume 2 on CD and a few of her DVDs. I would pick up any of her other albums but wouldn’t pay a lot for them.
😮😮 you met nick helm that's amazing mate kinda jealous he is brilliant very funny guy
They left out the annotation for the tracks. Looks weird without it.
Nice haul, although definitely not the first time Rock Montreal has been released on CD or vinyl...there was a 3LP boxset and double CD along with the BR in 2007. Yes, it has been VERY well released lol.
Ok, my mistake, thanks for the clarification
Just read back my comment and sorry if it sounded like a correction, I didn't mean it like that: I had the original from 2007, and it's the old story of having sold it and now it being worth a small fortune when I want to buy it back lol. I got the new 3LP set from the Queen store...they had an exclusive blue vinyl set, actually a wee bit cheaper than seeing the black vinyl in stores. Anyway, really enjoy the channel! Cheers!
Oh don’t worry I wasn’t offended, always happy to learn new information. I was highly tempted by the blue vinyl version but I had already committed to buying the black one from my record shop.
My local thrift store by my work has had some cool stuff lately. I always check for CDs mainly but yesterday was a cassette and vinyl day. Long live CDs!
Cool!
